For many women, having large breasts can be both a physical and emotional struggle. Problems the result from this can affect activities of everyday life and quality of life. The most common the back we received from our breast reduction patients is that they wish they had done it sooner. This problem affects women of all ages and can become symptomatic at any point in life.

Breast reduction is both cosmetic and reconstructive procedure that is highly individualized to the needs of each patient.

There are many issues that can come with having breasts that are too large or heavy. It is a condition often referred to as macromastia or gigantomastia. Women with breasts measuring over 500 grams each have macromastia. Breasts measuring larger than 1,000 grams each have gigantomastia.

Women with these conditions may experience physical pain and emotional issues that can be damaging to their self-image. These conditions are often linked to excessive sagging in the breasts, chronic back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, impaired breathing, chafing of the skin, deep indentations due to bra straps, and a struggle to find properly fitting clothes. Women with large breasts may also struggle with physical activity. Often, women with overly large breasts experience anxiety and depression.

As a result of the many physical manifestations of large breasts, many insurance companies will cover breast reduction surgery. Each insurance company has a specific policy outlining the necessary symptoms, conservative care requirements, and amount of tissue to be removed in order to qualify for breast reduction surgery. Dr. Waldman will review all of this is your consultation and help determine whether or not he would be a candidate for an insurance covered breast reduction surgery. Patients may also choose elective or cosmetic breast reduction surgery if they are without symptoms or denied coverage by their insurance company.

A breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure were the excess breast tissue was removed while preserving and often improving the overall shape of the breast. Ideal patients should be non-smokers who are in good health and have realistic expectations.

There are a number of technical considerations, such as the amount of tissue removed and the incision shape that will be made; these are decided upon beforehand during your consultation. During this consultation, it is important to discuss your medical history, personal goals, and expectations candidly.

The general results of the procedure are clear immediately, but the final results will not be evident until recovery is complete. Swelling will fade, as will surgical marks. The surgical team will provide detailed instructions on how to care for yourself and how to avoid complications.

Dr. Waldman has many years of experience with breast reduction surgery and offers multiple techniques to his patients. We offer both traditional anchor scars and short scar techniques also called lollipop incisions. In rare circumstances, liposuction only procedures can also be performed.

  • Incision type: This decision largely depends on the current size and shape of your breasts, as well as the extent of reduction you desire. Dr. Waldman will help you choose an approach that offers the best results for your physique. The incision lines that remain are visible and permanent scars, although usually well concealed beneath a swimsuit or bra.
  • Breast Lift: Virtually every breast reduction also includes a breast lift as part of the technique. This elevates the nipple and breast tissue on the chest wall creating a more youthful appearance.
  • Breast asymmetry: Often women have asymmetric large breasts. In these cases we removed more tissue from the larger breast and less tissue from the smaller breast improving both the shape and volume symmetry.
  • Breast cancer: Breast reduction surgery is also used quite frequently to help improve symmetry after breast cancer surgery. This can be done to improve the shape of her breast after lumpectomy or partial mastectomy. This can also be performed on the non-cancer breast to improve overall symmetry.

I am now more comfortable with myself in so many ways!

I am so happy I had the surgery. I had thought about it for some time but never thought I would go through with it. I am now more comfortable with myself in so many ways! Dr. Waldman’s relaxed demeanor helped me to feel relaxed and calm. Breast Reduction Patient

Breast Reduction Surgery and Recovery

Prior to surgery, you may be asked to have a mammogram, blood work, or evaluation by your primary care physician. Patients are also required to quit smoking prior to surgery.

Breast reduction surgery is usually performed in an operating room with general anesthesia. This can be done at a local hospital or Surgery Center. Most patients are able to go home the same day and recovery time for nonstrenuous work is approximately 1 week. Plan to have physical activity restrictions for 4-6 weeks after breast reduction surgery. Surgery will make your breasts smaller, perkier, and lighter. The goal is to make your breasts more proportionate to your body type and your body scale thus relieving the issues associated with very large breasts.
