What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction (Lipoplasty) is a surgical fat removal procedure that improves your body shape. A tube and vacuum device are used. There are different techniques that can be used for this plastic surgery procedure, including tumescent technique, power-assisted liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction, and ultrasound-assisted liposuction. Liposuction can be performed in many places on the body, even smaller and more delicate areas like the chin. The most common are abdomen liposuction, buttocks liposuction, hips and thighs liposuction, and upper arms liposuction. Good Candidates for Liposuction

Liposuction is most successful in people with good skin tone who are near normal weight but have localized fatty deposits. It is not a treatment for obesity. It is intended to produce a more flattering figure by improving contours and proportions. The procedure involves multiple small incisions through which a cannula or hollow tube is inserted. This tube is used to break up and remove the fat beneath the skin. Several areas can be suctioned at one operative setting although Dr. Waldman may limit the amount that can be removed safely at one time.

Recovering from Liposuction

The amount of fat removed during a liposuction procedure varies from patient to patient. The vast majority of patients are able to go home after surgery but patients who have large volumes of fat removed or have their surgery combined with other procedures may need to spend the night in the hospital. Most patients are out of work for up to a week. We recommend limiting her exercise for 3-4 weeks after surgery and sometimes longer depending on the amount of swelling. This may also vary if you’re liposuction is combined with other surgical procedures such as a tummy tuck or breast augmentation. It is very common to be swollen after liposuction in the final results may take months or longer to be fully appreciated. Having said that, patient’s generally can see a significant difference right after surgery. Compression/spandex garments are used after surgery to help control swelling.
